Feature film, fiction.

Synopsis

LUCIA is 14 years old but she looks a bit younger. She's skinny and her body is that of a girl. As she uses brackets she always smiles mouth closed and as soon as she finishes eating she goes to the bathroom to be sure her teeth are clean.

Lucía's parents are divorced. She and her brother FEDERICO (9) live with their mother in an apartment. ALBERTO is 43 years old and he is a chiropractic. He has left his wife and he spends little time with his children on weekends and holidays.

Alberto has rented a bungalow in a thermal resort to spend a week with Lucía and Federico. He has picked them up at dawn to gain time. Holidays will be short and the sky looks like it's going to rain.

During the silent road trip, it starts raining.

Once at the thermal resort the perspectives are discouraging: the place is a messy sucession of cabins and hotels full of eldery people. Moreover, the bungalow rented by Alberto is too small (only one bedroom for the three of them) and a lightning storm warning keep the pools closed for indefinite time.

Full of good intentions, Alberto –rather unsuccessfully– tries to take his children to several excursions to cheer them up and forget the failure of the family trip. In spite of her father's efforts, Lucía is not willing to give him any opportunity.

Lucía feels stuck in a claustrophobic situation that the insistence of his father in cheering up only worsen. Neither the tendency of Alberto to exaggerate everything, nor his noisy behaviour in public help Lucía, that frequently feels deeply embarrased.

The backdrop of this situation are the empty pools and the permanent presence of the rain.

During her second day at the resort, Lucía meets MADELÓN (15), a girl that although being her age looks more confident and mature. Lucía finds in Madelón not only the possibility of getting rid of her family and escape boredom, but also of doing things she usually doesn't do. With Madelón Lucía shares cigarrettes and she stays late at night drinking beer.

Nevertheless, when the boy she likes (AGUSTÍN, 16) looks interested in her new friend, Lucía decides to distance herself from Madelón and she finds in her father a safety exit for this new situation that she doesn't know how to handle. Now, the excursions that Alberto organizes doesn't look that horrible.

Certain strangeness emerges at the ending of the story. Lucía is left alone by chance and she's not sure what to do. She waits for her father and brother to return. As time passes and Alberto and Federico don't show up, Lucía looks at the place that, due to the changing weather, has recovered the life it lacked. Not knowing how to feel, Lucía let herself go.
